Business Ethics - What?

Business ethics is a branch of applied ethics. It treats ethical aspects of human actions within the sphere of business organizations and professional activities. As such, it is concerned with analysis of legitimizations, pondering of valuations and formulation of prescriptions. Thus, it is a reflexive or normative practice. It is to be distinguished from its empirical counterpart, viz. the moral sciences that study actual moral aspects of business practices, such as psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, historiography and empirical political sciences. Those sciences study what is, whereas ethics develops propositions about what is allowed and what not, about the distribution of responsibilities and about improving practices. Also, ethics is to be distinguished from and at the same time.
