Call Dropping Analysis in a UMTS/WLAN Integrated Cell
Dropping probability of the call requests in the UMTS with integrated WLAN reduces drastically if some portion of the WLAN bandwidth is kept reserved for the UMTS traffic. But the Call Admission Control (CAC) requires a new air interface on the reserved WLAN spectrum to handle the denied requests of UMTS. This prevents the implementation of WLAN hotspots using commercial WLAN standards. The authors propose a modified CAC scheme in which all requests are handled with the same priority without reserving any WLAN spectrum. The proposed model not only facilitates easy deployment of WLAN hotspots for UMTS operator, but also provides better performance at higher traffic load.
