Executive Summary

In multiuser networks, the deployment of cooperative relays between the wireless access point and the user terminals is a promising solution to increase the transmission rate and extend network coverage. This network architecture, referred to as Multiuser Relay Networks (MRN), is well-suited to emerging technologies such as IEEE 802.16j Mobile Multi-hop Relay (MMR) and IEEE 802.11s mesh networks. Driven by these, MRN with single antenna nodes has been analyzed in several recent contributions. The principal challenge in MRN is to achieve low error rates in a manner which requires low-complexity processing and reduced feedback overhead. A prospective solution is to install multiple antennas at all the nodes to exploit the benefits of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission.
