Driven by the popularity of Java, the availability of development tools, and the wide library support, the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ) is on the rise. It is used in avionics, shipboard computing, industrial control and music synthesis. Multiple virtual machines implementing the RTSJ are available. Real-time Java programs have different characteristics and requirements from traditional Java programs. While throughput remains important, it is predictability that is critical for real-time applications. Therefore many of the engineering tradeoffs that are an integral part of the design of a virtual machine have to be revisited to favor predictability over throughput.
