Distributed organizations have unique desktop management challenges. End users span the globe, are often offline or connected via higher latency links, and typically have administrative privileges that can lead to a more unstable PC environment. Emerging technologies show promise for reducing desktop TCO, but assessing how they will work in a distributed environment is critical. This white paper surveys existing and emerging approaches to desktop management in the enterprise, covering both traditional systems management methods, as well as newer desktop virtualization technologies.
