Clinical Academic Medicine in Jeopardy

At the very time that there are demanding challenges ahead, the increasing pressures on clinical academics and diminishing levels of support have made clinical academic medicine much less attractive as a career. The Council of the Academy of Medical Sciences convened a working group in 2001 to inquire into the state of clinical academic medicine at the start of the 21st century; to outline the challenges currently faced and highlight the main issues; and to make recommendations for change that could be implemented without undue delay.
