Cloud computing provides one with general purpose storage and server hosting platforms at a reasonable price. The authors explore the possibility of tapping these resources for the purpose of hosting source code repositories for individual projects as well as entire open source communities. An analysis of storage costs is presented, and a complete hosting solution is built and evaluated as a proof-of-concept. The advent of cloud computing has brought one a dazzling array of public computing services that can be instantly tapped by anyone with a credit card number. Users are spared from having to invest in expensive infrastructure such as servers, disks, and cooling equipment because the service provider takes care of these and amortizes the cost across many clients, achieving efficiency through economies of scale.
