This paper deals with the growth and development of the Scanian life science cluster by revisiting a previous empirical study in the light of new theoretical findings. It is argued that the transformation of the Scanian cluster must be evaluated with reference to the general development of the life science sector in Sweden as well as internationally. Therefore the position of Scania in different systems of regions must be taken into account. Patterns of functional interdependency within as well as between regions thus need to be explored on equal terms.
