In this paper, the authors propose a promising spectrum sharing scheme for the coexistent wireless systems, called cognitive cooperative relaying, which enables the secondary user to access the licensed spectrum without cognitive capability, by assistance of the cognitive relay. Three transmission strategies adopted by the cognitive relay are introduced, and the criterion of strategy selection is based on maintaining a constant rate for primary system while enlarging the capacity of the secondary system. In the SRA strategy, the cognitive relay has no influence on the interference margin, but utilizes the diversity gain to increase the transmit rate of secondary user.
