Executive Summary

The authors analyzed a total of 61 indicators for five of the world's largest economies - the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan. They selected indicators covering the five main categories of economic activity - consumption, business output and investment, labor markets, asset markets (housing and financial), and monetary policy. Within each category, they chose indicators that have led the recovery in GDP in previous recessions, compiling the list from a range of sources, including the OECD and The Conference Board - which also publish composite leading indicator indices.
