Smart card based password authentication protocols are widely adopted for logging into the remote servers. The protocols can provide mutual authentication between the client and the server over an open network. They make the users able to be authenticated by the remote server using a human-rememberable password and can provide the system with both an effective two-factor authentication mechanism and the ability of a remote server to authenticate a legal user without the necessity of maintaining a password table.
