Management of computer files has become an important task as one relies more and more on computer-based activities. When it comes to files and IT, it incorporates files on mobile devices to corporate servers, all of which pass through a PC. Therefore, when it comes to integrating such a variety of files with external or legacy applications, one is often faced with the issue of reading, writing and manipulating files. This paper delves on synchronous file manipulation and data transformation in WLI and BPEL PM. Manipulating files is a risky job because it can leave the files prone to errors. These errors may occur because one leaves a file open every time one reads it and one will see, or with repetitive tasks where the steps are basically the same no matter what one is doing. This paper discusses the use of integration tools that make working with files a lot easier. With these files, users can create a solution that is able to add a level of indirection and remove from the developer some of the cumbersome tasks when dealing with files. This paper discusses and shows, with examples, how both Oracle WebLogic Integration (WLI) and Oracle SOA Suite (specifically BPEL Process Manager or BPEL PM) are able to assist users with error-free file manipulation. For WLI this paper discusses the concept of a File Control that provides synchronous manipulation of files, and with BPEL PM the paper explains File Adapter and the surrounding concepts.
