Executive Summary

The GridFTP protocol has become a popular data movement tool used to build distributed grid-oriented applications. The GridFTP protocol extends the FTP protocol defined by and extended in some other IETF documents by adding certain features designed to improve the performance of data movement over a wide area network, to allow the application to take advantage of "Long fat" communication channels, and to help build distributed data handling applications The experience gained by these groups uncovered several drawbacks of the GridFTP v1 protocol. This paper is the result of the research conducted by the GridFTP working group.
