Data center power usage is developing into the primary concern for IT management. As recent as five years ago, the average power requirement per rack was between 1 and 3 kW. With the demand for more cores per processor slot, the increase in usage of both memory and storage, and the density of the equipment packed into each rack, it is now common for a typical rack to consume 5 kW to 10 kW. Couple this dramatic increase in power consumption with the rising price of electricity and data centers' inability to deliver this much power or cool the equipment using the power, and it is easy to see why data center power usage is so important.
