Server hardware technology has made great leaps in the recent years. With the advent of multi-core processors from Intel, a 4-socket server such as the IBM System x3850 M2 and the scalable x3950 M2 now pack up to 24 cores and 256GB of memory per chassis. In addition, IBM's enterprise X-Architecture eX4 chipset allows multiple IBM System x3950 M2 server chassis to be connected together in a cache-coherent way to build configurations with up to 96 cores. The latest Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 release now supports such a configuration of over 64 logical processors.
