This paper proposes a conventional method for optimizing a multiplexing system to establish a network that is both reliable and cost effective. Two candidate multiplexing systems are applied to such a network, the Bandwidth-Guaranteed Multiplexing (BGM) system and the Statistical Multiplexing (SM) system. To clarify the reliability of the SM system, real traffic in a Wide Area Network (WAN) is measured and confirmed to follow a normal distribution. The authors introduce an error-free condition into the system taking account the traffic characteristics and propose a method to clarify the application area for both multiplexing systems.
