Telecare can support the independence and well-being of people in need of care remotely and automatically and bring about great economic and social benefits for society. In this paper, the authors apply the cooperative communications technique to the wireless sensor networks used for telecare systems. The diversity created through cooperation among the sensor nodes can significantly improve data dissemination quality in the wireless environment, and hence more accurate information regarding location, condition and movement of the people monitored can be achieved. The performance enhancements and trade-offs of this application are demonstrated in the paper using a wireless sensor network testbed.
