Software costs form a major chunk of the total cost of any IT initiative since the hardware costs have gone down drastically due to advances in the hardware sector. The software costs consist of developmental and operational costs. The quality of Database design has a huge impact on these costs. A bad database design will be disastrous for an organization but even a good database design also may not guarantee lower software cost. A good database design can be improved further to reduce the software costs. In this paper the author shows how to achieve this by using a limited number of tables to hold multiple domain values while designing the database.
