There is no silver bullet for improving the supervision, management and leadership of criminal investigations. The evidence base is too small to allow for the problem to be defined with any precision or for the way forward to be mapped out with any confidence. What is beyond doubt, is that criminal investigation plays a key role in the delivery of effective policing services and so those supervising, managing and leading in this area need to be competent practitioners. It is believed that most of those involved do have the required level of competence to perform their roles effectively, but there is sufficient evidence to suggest that some do not.
