The main focus of this paper is to evaluate the criticality of assets in the Internet infrastructure. Towards this end, the authors first analyze the structural property of the geographical network derived from the Internet backbone topology, using standard graph-theoretical tools. They, then model realistic Internet routing and compare the frequencies at which Internet locations appear on the paths in the backbone topology. They further improve their ranking results by weighing these paths with session-level traffic demands that are generated from synthetic end devices. Finally, they perform consequence-based analysis on Internet facilities by computing the amount of un-routable traffic after each of them is removed.
