With the increase in the amount of data transferred, stored, accessed and shared using the electronic medium, the security threat to such an electronic database is also growing day by day. Everyday incidents related to unauthorized access to sensitive information take place in the web community. In order to be able to secure the data from any eavesdropper a student must understand the challenges faced by the database management and learn how to maintain the security of sensitive data or information by finding solutions to the major concerns. This paper provides an insight on mechanisms for data security. Principally, database security consists of three major constructs: securing data and other relevant information from any unauthorized user, prevention of unauthorized access of data identification and correction of related software or hardware errors that might result in unavailability of data. Generally, in the curricula of the computing disciple, the topic of database security is included only in the introductory course for computer security while this paper introduces a list of sub-topics such as network security, physical security, authentication and encryption that might form a part of the database security course going forward. Not only that, this paper also highlights some of the major challenges and hurdles in conveying the appropriate and essential information to children by making use of an interactive modules in each topic and sub-topic.
