Denial of Service and the Distributed Denial of Service Attacks has recently emerged as one of the most interesting, if not the greatest, weaknesses of the Internet. TCP-based flooding attacks are a common form of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks which results in maltreatment of network resources and can bring about serious threats to the Internet. Incorporating IP spoofing makes it even more difficult to defend against such attacks. TCP SYN floods send large amounts of TCP SYN packets with spoofed source addresses. These SYN packets identify the initiation of a connection, and the receiving side of the connection must then acknowledge and wait for confirmation message from the initiator before the connection is half opened.
