In this paper, an analytical model has been proposed for sleep-based power saving mechanisms to analyze packet queueing delay with the existence of both downlink and uplink traffic. Different awake scenarios, which lead to different packet delay conditions, have been considered. The model is suitable for general power saving mechanisms and specifically the authors apply it to IEEE 802.16e networks. Based on the analysis and simulation results, it is observed that the queueing delay increases as the sleep window increases; for a fixed overall arrival rate of downlink and uplink traffic, the queueing delay decreases as the uplink rate increases. It is expected that the research work should be helpful for better understanding of sleep-based power saving mechanisms.
