This paper presents an efficient channel estimation scheme for multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based ultra-wideband communications. The scheme is based on a simple Least-Square (LS) algorithm, but enhanced with channel frequency response aided decision-directed detection as well as frequency-domain smoothing. The mean-squared error performance and computational complexity of the scheme are investigated. Numerical examples show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the conventional LS solutions and performs comparable to the maximum-likelihood solutions. Multi-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based Ultra-WideBand (UWB) communication has attracted considerable attention in recent years.
