Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an emerging technology for remotely identifying assets and controlling devices via a wireless link. A typical RFID transponder (tag) consists of an antenna and an integrated circuit chip which stores an identification number and other information. The passive RFID tags are usually the least expensive and most reliable and so are popular for tracking and managing assets. The biggest problem with traditional tags is the effect of metal surfaces and other nearby objects on their performance. This can have a devastating effect on efficiency of the antenna. Not only does this influence the reading range in passive tags but also affects the operating life expectancy of active tags.
