Design of Data Forwarding Strategies in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Executive Summary

The Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) is an emerging new technology and is a promising approach for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). In comfort and safety applications, a vehicle may need to query data from another vehicle via multi-hop communications. Data routing in the VANET environment suffers from frequent disconnections due to high mobility and sparsely connected networks. Data delivery using greedy forwarding has become a powerful means in the VANET. In this paper, the authors propose a series of data forwarding strategies that are based on the position prediction of neighboring and destination nodes. They verify the proposed strategies in simulated environments that model real streets and vehicle movements.
