Wireless mesh technology applied to 802.11 devices allows for the benefits of infrastructure based wireless communication without costly wired back-haul. It allows for multi-hop network topologies which offer increased capacity as well as self-healing routes when certain links are affected by interference or movement, as long as adequate redundant routes exist in the network. Evaluation of the performance of a mesh network can be performed via simulation. Whilst useful in the initial stages of network evaluation, simulations have a pitfall due to the propagation models inadequately representing actual radio environments.
