Research activities in PLC area such as measurements of time-varying channel features and evaluations of communication synchronization methodologies require a precise and stable global time reference. This paper introduces the development and application of GPS-based time synchronization for the purpose of power line channel characterizations. Algorithms have been developed to stabilize the time synchronization and to compensate errors caused by device-associated deviations. The proposed method can reach sub-microsecond accuracy. Long-term measurements and data acquisition can be carried out with a platform which will also be presented in this paper.
