Traditionally, engineers attempt to balance the selection of individual components that go into a system by finding the best technologies to achieve the overall design objectives. This paper explains why the answer to that question is an emphatic "No." In order to understand why, they need to examine the capabilities and limitations of persistent store technologies such as directories. They further demonstrate why IAM solutions must ensure that persistent store replicas maintain a consistent view of all objects across all nodes in order to properly enforce access policy across the enterprise. They will also discuss why extending the directory is not the ideal solution to ensure the integrity of critical state information necessary for time sensitive IAM applications.
