Executive Summary

CDMA has proven to be a superior technology for wireless communication in cellular environments. However, it has not been fully exploited in ad hoc networks; several key challenges have to be resolved to enable distributed CDMA operation. One of the key challenges is distributed code assignment: how to assign codes to mobile hosts in such a way that minimizes conflicts and uses a small number of codes. This problem has been studied in the context of FDMA and TDMA with multiple channels. While there is a significant amount of work in this area, it is mostly theoretical and with assumptions that make the solutions unusable for one's purposes.
