In the January issue of Wharton@Work, executive coach Deb Giffen provided a three-step approach to proactive career management. Here, she speaks with the academic co-directors of Wharton's Advanced Management Program Peter Cappelli and Tom Gerrity about making a functional move - for you and your organization. Giffen begins, "If you've been working on identifying growth areas (which is the first step in career management), you are thinking about your strengths and interests in terms of your job. Are you doing what you excel in and enjoy? If not, have you determined what you need to do to make that happen? Sometimes introspection leads executives to realize that their functional area is not their ideal fit."
