With the goal of reducing overall health care spending and improving quality of care, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, a component of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will provide $17.2 billion to encourage providers to implement or enhance Health Information Technology (HIT) systems. Funds will flow to physicians and hospitals through the Medicaid and Medicare programs in the form of incentives for the "meaningful use" of certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology.
