Spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel are widely used within most organisations and with good reason. They're powerful, easy to use, and they allow users to perform calculations quickly and easily. Some users within a business will quickly become adept at manipulating large data extracts in Excel, often deriving new fields, pivoting data, aggregating data, even producing charts and dashboards. "All good", one might say. Unfortunately this power comes at a cost and it's not always immediately obvious that the cost is there.
