Wireless LANs are increasingly popular and are being used for a wide variety of applications. In order to accommodate the demands of real-time services and multimedia based applications, the authors try to increase the performance and efficiency of the MAC scheduling protocol for the Point Coordination Function (PCF). PCF is intended to facilitate real time traffic; however, the performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol PCF is highly affected by conditions on the LAN and may contain unnecessary overhead. To address these problems, this paper proposes an aging priority scheduling algorithm and a dynamic adaptation algorithm to vary the PCF interval based on the traffic. Simulation results show the algorithms are efficient and suitable for PCF traffic.
