Executive Summary

There is a strong current interest in migrating substantial parts of the traditionally wired industrial infrastructure to wireless technologies to improve flexibility, scalability, and efficiency. However, concerns about network latency, reliability and security along with the lack of device interoperability have hampered the deployment rate. To address these concerns, WirelessHART, the first open and interoperable wireless communication standard specially designed to address the critical needs of real-world industrial applications, has recently been approved and released. The WirelessHART architecture is designed to be an easy-to-use wireless mesh networking protocol, leveraging on advanced techniques such as time diversity, frequency diversity and path diversity to achieve the level of reliability and latency required to support advanced process monitoring and control applications.
