The rapid growing of IP traffic and the new emerging applications and services such as cloud computing and high quality IP services (VoIP, IPTV, etc.) require a high capacity optical backbone network. Operator's main purpose is to find different ways to provide all these services in a cost-effective manner. Conventional fixed-grid and rigid-bandwidth wavelength division multiplexing networks lead to an inefficient utilization of bandwidth resources. In order to efficiently deal with the current and future demand, elastic optical networks have been proposed. They introduce flexibility in the system and increase the overall spectral efficiency allowing network re-configurability.
