Executive Summary

This paper deals with wireless sensor networks within the engine room of vessels. At the engine room data like temperature, flow and pressure have to be measured. To replace cabling and to reduce costs a wireless sensor network is of interest. Therefore the special EMC environment within the engine room had been analyzed on board of different vessels. In the next step the susceptibility of the motes against possible disturbances had been investigated. Due to the special application area the best suited routing protocol had been chosen and implemented. The behaviour of this routing protocol had been tested in the lab when possible disturbers are present. Finally the system had been tested in the engine room of a new cruise vessel during the sea trials.
