Wireless Fibre Systems (WFS), Ltd. began investigating through-water and through-ground ElectroMagnetic (EM) communications and sensing in 2004 targeting applications in the Defence, Oil and Gas and Environmental industries. This paper describes the development of an Underground Communications System for one by Initial Response Teams and Emergency services in an urgent situation. The significant obstacles encountered are being addressed with modern simulation techniques, a modular approach and advances in both high-power and low-noise analogue electronics. Theoretical analysis and modelling was carried out to better understand the challenges involved and what was required to support through-ground RF communications. WFS's underwater RF comms equipment was modified for use through ground to support data delivery and a number of trials are planned to substantiate the analysis and modelling.
