The next generation of cloud-ready data centre networking needs to deliver increased availability, scalability and flexibility, improved utilization as well as multi-tenancy capabilities. This paper discusses the currently deployed data centre networking technologies, their limitations and challenges. It introduces a number of emerging technologies and standards that will address these shortcomings in the very near future leading to the concept of the data centre Ethernet fabric. The intended audience is infrastructure architects with a good understanding of networking and server virtualization technologies as well as familiarity with standards.
