In this paper the authors present an overview of the contingencies that enable effective alliance capability development. The research goal is to determinate those factors that contribute to an effective alliance knowledge management system. They consider both organization specific elements and external environmental factors and analyze how these factors drive the way in which alliances are effectively managed. The hypotheses are tested on a sample of 140 Belgian companies using linear regression. They find that the top management team's involvement with the company's alliances has the strongest impact on the development of alliance management knowledge systems.
