The rapid growth of the GSM subscriber base has led to aggressive network expansion, especially in emerging markets. Telecom operators need to increase the spectrum utilization of voice services and improve the hardware efficiency of both new and already installed network equipment. The advent of new wireless services, such as machine-to-machine communications and mobile broadband, make these needs even more acute. To ensure competitiveness and profitability, GSM operators must keep operational expenditure under control, while reducing the environmental impact. VAMOS, a recent initiative by 3GPP, is expected to alleviate the pressure on GSM network operators as it doubles the Transceiver (TRX) peak capacity; in other words, it doubles the number of users served by a single radio resource.
