Executive Summary

To achieve cost reduction, simplified operations and flexible scalability in the transport of IP and emerging Ethernet services, network operators need to migrate their optical transport technologies from the coarse aggregation and deterministic multiplexing of the legacy TDM-based SONET/SDH technology, towards efficient aggregation, statistical multiplexing and QoS management of the connection-oriented packet transport technology. In this paper, the packet transport technology that is best positioned as a solid alternative to SONET/SDH is the MPLS Transport Profile (MPLS-TP). The authors present a lab trial to provide Ethernet services over a packet transport network using coordinately operated GMPLS control and management planes to support dynamic provisioning and restoration of MPLS-TP tunnels and pseudo-wires.
