Executive Summary

A novel OSNR-based IRWA algorithm and the required GMPLS extensions for dynamic provisioning in translucent WSON are presented. Experimental evaluation and validation in the ADRENALINE test-bed shows an important blocking reduction compared to transparent networks. Optical transport is evolving from opaque (all-electrical 3R switching) towards transparent (all-optical switching) networks in order to achieve important benefits such as freedom on bit rates and traffic formats, cost reduction, etc. However, two constraints impose fundamental limitations for this network evolution, namely, physical impairments constraining the maximum signal transmission reach, and the Wavelength Continuity Constraint (WCC).
