Executive Summary

Due to the ever growing demand for higher data rates, some of the most recent wireless communication standards, as IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) and IEEE 802.11n (WiFi), make use of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver. Such schemes using multiple antennas, also known as MIMO systems, are able to achieve much higher rates than single antenna systems. One of the several ways to utilize the multiple antennas with the goal of increasing data rate is the Bell-Labs LAyered Space-Time (BLAST) system. The transmission rate can increase linearly with the number of transmit antennas when using BLAST.
