Fax Over IP Networks:? Opportunities and Options

Sending a fax over an IP network combines the flexibility of traditional fax with the convenience and cost-efficiency of e-mail. Fax over IP will quickly become a popular standard for inter- and intra-company communications, primarily because it provides multiple opportunities for enterprises to reduce calling charges. Existing fax machines can be connected to the Internet and other IP networks via fax gateways, LAN fax servers, and IP telephony gateways. IP fax service options fall into two main categories -- store-and-forward and real-time. Standards have been defined for both store-and-forward and real-time fax over IP. The choice of which fax method is most appropriate for a specific application can be made by selecting the features and service required and the delay of the network to be used. This techical overview discusses the service options, standards, and NMS Communications products that are available to help solution developers design fax over IP solutions.
