The time for contemplation and debate over how best to migrate HFC in a fast-changing marketplace is past. Escalating requirements for HDTV bandwidth ensure that current bandwidth efficiency solutions will not leave enough capacity for any significant surge in uncast requirements. Given the competitive pressures they face, cable operators must be prepared to act immediately wherever the next explosion in narrowcasting bandwidth occurs. This means long-standing perceptions about the costliness and complications of extending fiber deeper in the cable plant must give way to recognition that a new era in fiber migration has begun.
