Executive Summary

The 3GPP has extensively discussed the 3G Long Term Evolution (LTE) and the core specifications were frozen at the end of 2008. The Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access (EUTRA), which is the radio access system in 3G LTE, can support full IP-based functionalities with low latency and low cost. In the E-UTRA downlink, Adaptive Modulation and Channel coding (AMC), Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) with packet combining, frequency and time domain channel-dependent scheduling, and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) are adopted as key techniques, which are appropriate to packet-based radio access. Among these techniques, MIMO is the key technique to support a peak data rate above 100 Mbps.
