Executive Summary

Server virtualization brings many benefits, including improved resource utilization, server consolidation, and lower data center operating costs. However, with these benefits comes complexity. Processes and tools that may have worked perfectly in the physical world need to adapt to working in a virtual one. Virtualization significantly changes the game as workloads are migrated to run and share a common pool of physical resources. All too often, ESG has seen customers virtualize without first carefully considering the numerous variables and repercussions of change - they suddenly run into roadblocks that cause the adoption rate to plateau and negatively affect some of the initial benefits and goals of server virtualization.
