Fujitsu Publishes the First SAP Three-Tier Benchmark on VMware vSphere
The engineers at Fujitsu have designed an ideal solution for large organizations which have a very large number of SAP users who need support in virtual environment spread across multiple hosts and also be efficient at the same time. The configuration includes virtualized system which operates on VMware vShere 4.0 via the SAP SD Benchmark. The initial tests prove that this solution can work on systems that need to support up to 16,000 users. Experts claim that this is a ground breaking solution in a SAP Three Tier system. Fujitsu has released a paper and the report that provides information on this first SAP Three Tier testing. The paper describes that a traditionally used 2 tier configuration has very low CPU usage (only 10%) by the database as the CPU is mostly dominated by applications. Though this configuration may be sufficient if the system only has a few users, the load profile of a system running on a three tier configuration is much more beneficial for supporting large number of users. A 3 tier configuration has a bigger shared memory which allows databases to have a higher CPU usage. The paper also shares details on the test configurations, performance settings, and highlights of the benchmark performance.
