In version 9.2, SAS added the ability to create user-written functions and call routines using the SAS DATA step language, and make these functions and call routines available to the DATA step programmer. In an earlier paper, the author demonstrated the basics of creating and using the own functions. This paper goes beyond those basic steps and shows some more advanced uses of the PROC FCMP and its cousin, PROC PROTO. This paper will review creating DATA step language functions with PROC FCMP. After showing the creation and use of these functions, the paper will shift to PROC PROTO and show how to incorporate C language functions into SAS.
